I've run out of superlatives to describe this country! We have just returned from a trip west to visit Milford sound, where we took a 10 mile boat trip through the fiord to see the scenery. Mitre peak rises over 5000 ft straight out of the water and the whole trip is punctuated by the most spectacular waterfalls. Milford gets the highest annual rain fall in NZ, and it seemed to all fall the day we were there! This meant that the water falls were heaving!
The previous day we took a boat across Lake Te Anau to visit the glow worm caves. They were truly amazing. Once in the caves we were taken by boat deep underground through a beautiful cave system, once in the grotto we were plunged into total darkness. It was impossible to see your hand in front of your face, but the roof of the cave was covered with thousands of star like glow worms. The children did really well as they had to stay silent the whole time.
